Significant Moments in Peoria’s History

One year after the Arizona canal was completed, two men from Peoria, Illinois, settled on the land that was to become the town of Peoria. By the turn of the century, there would be 26 families living there.

The Phoenix-Prescott train line was finished in 1895. The Peoria depot was critical to the area farmers who needed a way to ship their crops to market. With the warm climate and the water from canals and wells, they could grow year round.

World War II prompted the need for Luke Field where new pilots came for training. Becoming Luke Air Force Base after the war, its close proximity has influenced Peoria’s growth.

The city’s first big growth spurt was in the 1980s when the population grew from 12,351 to 50,675. In 1994, the city opened the Peoria Sports Complex. This brought the excitement of spring training baseball to the area.

The community blossomed around it. Peoria’s P83 Entertainment District was established to serve residents and visitors.

The city’s growth caused the Challenger Space Center to open here in 2000. It has since moved to Phoenix, but the emphasis on aerospace and technology remains an important part of the city’s identity.
