Sun City AZ at a Glance
Most towns grow slowly. Sun City AZ didn’t have that problem. After 100,000 people came to its grand opening in 1960, the developers got busy building homes to accommodate them.
Today there are more than 27,730 housing units. Some 44,000 people call it home.
All of this was the idea of Del Webb, a developer who started a similar community in Menifee, California. Marinette, a true ghost town, was chosen for its prime real estate potential and its proximity to Phoenix (Source: CBS News)
The original plans called for golf courses and recreation centers. These are still in use today, although there have been many changes and upgrades over the years. There are four lawn bowling areas, which has attracted professionals to Sun City for tournaments.
The seven recreation centers offer swimming pools, workout rooms, and gathering places. Where there were once strictly tennis courts, now there are some brand new pickleball courts.
From 1973 to 1985, the Milwaukee Brewers had a training facility here. With that gone, Sun city residents have a short drive to numerous Cactus League games. Our favorite is Surprise Stadium where both the KC Royals and Texas Rangers have their spring training.

Sun City Golf Courses
Whether you want a challenge or you just want to swing a club, you’ll find eight places to play golf in Sun City. The North Golf Course is marked by large trees because it was the first to be laid out and planted.
If you like regulation courses, the South Golf Course has earned recognition from Golf Magazine. If you like water challenges, the Lakes West Course winds around streams and ponds for 18 holes.
You’ll find wide corridors at the 18-hole Willowcreek Golf Course and big bold greens at the Riverview Course. Executive courses include Lakes East and Willowbrook. While you play, you can do some bird watching at the 9-hole Quail Run Golf Course, a certified Audubon sanctuary.

Scenic Spots Near Sun City
Living in Arizona, we are spoiled with choices when we want to enjoy nature. Without driving too far, you can see deserts, mountains, forests, and lakes. Some of our favorite destinations are the Sonoran Preserve, White Tank Regional Mountain Park, and Lake Pleasant Regional Park.
For a scenic drive, you can head to the Petrified Forest. There’s a forest loop road with awesome views. If you want to hike, the Blue Mesa Trail is doable for most people if the temperature isn’t too hot.
Another scenic drive is the Red Rock Scenic Byway to Sedona. You may want to extend your scenic drive into the Oak Creek Canyon and cruise up to Flagstaff.
If you want to immerse yourself in history, you can stop by the Pioneer Living History Museum just off of I-17. Montezuma’s Castle, one of the most beautiful architectural wonders of Arizona, is another easy stop off of I-17. Just beyond it, the Tuzigoot National Monument offers a completely different look at old architecture.
